"Overcoming Negative Self-Talk"
Stress Reduction Wellness Group
February Topic: Negative Self-Talk can be the most powerful and debilitating cause of stress, depression and anxiety. Many times we are totally unaware of the harmful thoughts that are on repeat in our minds and how these irrational and distorted beliefs negatively affect our mood. The way in which we interpret and perceive events in our lives is what affects us the most, more so the actual events themselves.
For example, the diagnosis of female infertility is in itself very sad and painful. This is primary suffering. But the way you interpret and wrap meaning around that diagnosis is what usually causes the deepest type of pain. This interpretation is called secondary suffering and may sound like “I am a failure as a woman and have no worth if I cant have kids.” Imagine if instead you believed the more true statement of “My body has failed me. This is devastating but it has nothing to do with my value as a woman.” Can you see how each thought would produce very different feelings?
So our goal is to help you learn how to take these toxic thoughts captive and test them against what we know to be rational and true. This is formally called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
